SUL OPAC minutes. Colleen and Marina spoke about the agenda for the meeting on 2.14. She indicated that there would be discussion of the Visioning Summit including an update on the usability task force and the Subcommittee on Leadership and Structure. Marina suggested the subcommittee structure would be discussed and speculated that it may be a stand alone committee, not subcommittee, which would serve as an advisory group to FCLA. THis would later be discussed at the March CCL meeting. Other new issues to be discussed include daily updates. It was mentioned that dynamic updates is nearly impossible. Exact phrase searching which was discussed on the listserv is also a likely topic for the SUS call. Only UCF expressed reservation about adding this. However, because the default would be set to "no" (same as in ALEPH) and implementing it can be made at the local level, having FCLA do the programming is likely.
Marina announced that the icons issue would likely be addressed by a group of 4-6 people to decide how to select icons. She mentioned that the general consensus of the 10 or so comments made (mostly by UF folks) is that one icon is used for items, and that it be the format (e.g. DVD icon specificly, not media icon). Rich revealed that when he asked Denise Bennett about the use of the online icon she agreed that it would be a preferable icon for items available electronically. Marina pointed out that some libraries have special formats which may not work with that standard (e.g. Music Library items). Jason recommended that only items not held as a book would have an icon attributed. These are issues that should be considered by the special group in prioritizing the use of icons. In addition, the diacritics is was raised again because a patron could not find a Spanish-language journal; this is still a priority for UF.
Colleen raised the issue of indexing the 970 field. UF uses this field for the Table of Contents paid for (75ยข/ record for UF), but access for all of SUL would be too expensive. A recommendation is that the field not be searched in the Title index. Rich indicated that this issue may be a non-issue with the use of bolded text in search results and that keeping the 970 in the Anywhere index would be sufficient.
Single OPAC topics/user interface meeting update. Marilyn reported that the Resource Navigation Committee has expressed reservation in hosting the electronic resources topics meetings and that the charge would be reviewed with Shelley to see if hosting the meetings for both the RNC and Endeca Group would be appropriate. Marilyn assured her that the planned single OPAC meeting would still occur, but logistics needed to be hashed out; it was decided to aim for a mid-March session. Rich provided statistics for the August to December 2007 period showing that ALEPH use was primarily focused on Browse searching. Jason and Rich pointed out that a new browse search in test uses same functionality as the subject linking from the full record and could satisfy the needs of those using the "Title Begins With" search in ALEPH.
Problem Form. Rich has renamed some of the categories used in the mockup. Though much discussion, the following were agreed to:
Comment/Suggestion; Searching Question/Problem; Report Catalog Error; Renewal; Recall/Hold; Problem Connecting; Course Reserves; Other. Jason indicated that LIC and HSCL are added to the local form. Jason offered to compile statistics to see numbers of messages and what email addresses are being contacted. Colleen indicated that these questions answered need to be counted; Jason said he would include that in the programming request.
In addition, tangentical issues were raised: other forms are available on appropriate pages for users to fill out problems specifically regarding the resource they are using so very specific elements do not need to be added to this general form. An example of a separate form is one for users trying to signing on to the library account. Colleen asked for the addition of library renewal messages for overdue materials.
Basic Search interface additions. Rich spoke about the ability we have to control the space above and below the search box on the Basic search interface. He provided a mockup of it; discussion of this mockup with all staff could be another "hook" for the upcoming ALEPH vs Endeca topics meeting. Jimmie brought up the idea that some journal articles are being added to the Catalog (Cooper collection) and that part of the description of the Catalog be revised to be "Specific journal articles are usually not found...." Also she recommended that special seaches box include diacritics/foreign language search link. Marilyn recommend that he send the page to the RNC for input.
Endeca and digital collections full text search. Jason had nothing to report.
SUL Endeca Usability Group updates. The usability team will begin testing on Friday 2.15.08.
